Kindle is not officially launched in India yet. It doesnot work on the wifi system in India i.e if you have bought a kindle in US it will not be able to connect to a wireless network in India i.e to say if you have setup a wireless network at home, you won't be able to connect to it and read some website from the browser embedded in Kindle. This is due to local country restrictions on the Kindle version. Most probably this should go away once kindle is officially launched in India.
However that being said still you can use it.How
You can connect it via USB to access books or music on your computer and store on it
By default Kindle can open any PDF document as well. So if you have a pdf on your computer you can read it on kindle (the font size is not great but still its good). Also you can convert the pdfs to kindle format too, there is software available for that. If you have bought books from kindle, you can transfer them from your computer to your kindle and read them. Also they would be available to you on any of the internet enabled devices including your tablets or mobiles.
Kindle whispernet, the technology that connects kindle to the 3g network of the cellular services, would also not work in India currently. That is to say you cannot connect kindle to internet via your cellular service network ( like Airtel) and buy a book from amazon store to read it.However you can buy the book from your computer and transfer via USB to your kindle.
